Hard Earned Miles

I'm 3 weeks into my marathon training program and things are still going pretty well. Early this week I did have to fight my way through a couple of training sessions however. After running 9 miles last Saturday, I headed down to the cabin to work on Sunday and Monday. After 2 full days of chain saw work and clearing away brush and downed trees, my body was beat up and exhausted.

On the one hand, it feels good that I am in good enough shape to complete that work, on the other hand, training doesn't stop. I did squeeze in a 3 mile run on Monday morning in Ottumwa. Although it was overcast and dreary, it was pretty running on some different trails along the Des Moines river. I even got to watch an Eagle flying up and down the river during my run.

After returning home that evening I hit the exercise bike but opted to push my strength training for the day to later in the week. On Tuesday morning I had to get up and pound the pavement for 5 miles before getting the girls to daycare and heading off to work. I knew that I was so warn out that the miles wouldn't come easy, but it ended up being ridiculous. Less then 2 miles in my legs were completely gone, but I managed to trudge along the rest of the way, practically dragging my feet.

The truth is that I will never be a professional runner or triathlete, so I have to make do with fitting training into the rest of my life. Sometimes it isn't easy, but I firmly believe that it is those miles, just like the 5 I ran last Tuesday on tired legs that help define who I am. It is those miles that not only make me a better runner, but also make me a better person. Those are the miles that build confidence and will pay off the most when I hit mile 20 in the marathon next June and feel like stopping. Knowing that I can, and have, pushed through will help me to keep going.

Every time I head out for a run, swim, or bicycle ride, I pray for everything to go smoothly and to feel good along the way but I know that training, like life, isn't always easy. I also believe that without the hard times, we could not appreciate the good times as much.

One Week In

So I succeeded in making it through the first week of my marathon training program and I am still in one piece. Yesterday provided nearly perfect running conditions for my long run of the week. I had 8 miles to put in and Erin suggested that I head out to Saylorville so that is just what I did. My legs felt great through the first 7 miles but ended up getting a little tired over the last mile. Part of that could have to do with the fact that I forgot my energy gel at home. My legs recovered very quickly and I didn't have any soreness today at all.

I also had a great swim on Friday morning. I've been swimming at a pace around 2:45 min/100 yd during my 1,000 yd swims but on Friday I managed an average of 2:24 min/100 yd which is nearly back to my in season pace from last summer.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been following a nutrition plan that my wife, Erin, helped me design. I'm happy to say that the plan seems to be working. I have been feeling great over the past couple of weeks. My energy levels have been up, and training and recovery have improved.

Oh, and since I haven't mentioned it so far, Erin is killing it on the treadmill these days. She has put in something like 120 miles so far this year and isn't slowing down at all. Her dedication has been inspiring and I have really enjoyed sharing a goal with her for the year.
